I got a call on one of my listings and met with the prospective buyers. Turns out, they purchased a vacation cabin a year ago and what a nightmare! I felt so sorry for them and wish I had represented them with their purchase. The realtor had less than a years experience. Don’t get me wrong, everyone has to start somewhere. I would love to have my first 3 years of clients back for a redo. The cabin they purchased turned out to be a money pit! The realtor who represented them did not know how to navigate the inspection report or verify any of the issues. The realtor also did not know how to deal with issues that came up at the final walk through. Purchasing a home is or should be the best investment you can participate in. Helping out your best friends daughter who just got into real estate is very admirable but if in the end if it cost you more in repairs than she got for her commission, you might want to rethink that choice! Don’t be afraid to ask the realtor what their experience is. You can also go to their website and see what kind of testimonials they have. It is ok to tell a realtor that you don’t feel comfortable with them representing you. A good realtor will recommend someone else in their office to represent you and be happy to get a referral fee vs losing the opportunity all together.
